Chilli peppers – general information
It is useful not only when solving crosswords or bragging about knowledge during family meetings:). When we say Chilli, we really mean the fruit of many varieties of pepper. Their common feature is their spicy taste. It is the result of the presence of capsaicin. About which more below.
Some varieties of peppers:
- Tabasco – it’s a component of the popular spicy sauce
- Habanero – comes from the Amazon region, one of the most spicy peppers. There are several varieties.
- Piri-Piri – grown mainly in Africa, e.g. Ghana, Mozambique
- Trinidad Scorpion Butch T – until one point the most spicy variety of pepper. They are now ‘stronger’ peppers.
- Cayenne – it is a popular spice, a variety of annual pepper
Of course, this is just an expression of what this plant offers us. All of them are quite similar. I mean, fruit, of course. Characteristic and not to be confused with anything else.
Chilli peppers – composition
Before we move on to properties and how they affect weight loss, let us get to know what is in these plants. First, minerals. Spicy peppers (in various quantities, of course) contain potassium, copper, zinc and calcium. Chilli are also vitamins A, E, C and part of group B. And each of them has a certain influence on excessive kilograms.
But the greatest wealth is capsaicin. It is an organic chemical compound that, as I said, is responsible for the spiciness of the Chilli pepper. It also has mucous membrane irritating properties. It acts on pain receptors. That is why it feels like this when you eat it. The latter process also raises the body temperature. Remember this, because this is how Chilli pepper helps to lose weight.
Usage of capsaicin:
- In medicine
- In the kitchen
- As a weapon. It is used in pepper spray.
Chilli pepper and medicine – how do you use it
It is some kind of misinterpretation and the capsaicin itself will be mainly described here. Well, the compound is used as a warming drug since it is useful for muscles and joints. First of all, you will find capsaicin in ointments and slices and it is received from the Chilli pepper extract.
An interesting fact, although still under discussion, is the possibility of using capsaicin in… prostate cancer treatment. The results of studies to confirm this were published in 2005 (you can read them here). In simple terms, capsaicin is supposed to attack cancer cells and “force” them to self-destruct. This process is called apoptosis.
Chilli in the kitchen
Obviously, it is primarily used as a spice. But we wwill not start with that. It is used, among other things, as a food dye. Capsaicin is also found in ready products. Here, however, a very big “but” appears.
Well, because of the costs in these ready products capsaicin is usually synthetic. And this one, especially in high concentrations, is toxic. Fortunately, from the point of view of our latitude, its use has been prohibited in the European Union since 2008. The spiciness of the ready products is now given by the pepper extract labelled as E160c. For those on a diet, however, “no topic”. Ready-made dishes are forbidden.
However, you can use Chilli to spice up your food during weight loss without fear. Especially that during this time you need to get rid of the main carrier of taste, namely salt.
Chili and slimming – how does it help?
It is time to discuss the most important property. Capsaicin raises body temperature. It belongs to the group of so-called thermogenics. If you “spin” around a little bit about the subject of healthy eating and losing weight, then you have certainly come across this name.
The principle is simple. They increase your body temperature, stimulate your metabolism, and above all, they accelerate the process of burning fat tissue. The body needs more energy to digest some food products. This is what raising the temperature involves. Chilli pepper helps to lose weight, but it is worth knowing that it is not the only thermogen.
Who shouldn’t use chilli to lose weight?
That is a very important question. Kilograms should be lost safely and sensibly. This is about the main feature of capsaicin, namely sharpness and irritation of the mucous membranes. If you have any problems with your digestive system and you are “sensitive” to what you eat, I would think about using Chilli.
The presence of ulcers on your stomach precludes the use of any really sharp spices. Women who are breastfeeding should watch out for capsaicin. In the meantime, it is better to put the spicy food away. If you are suffering from hypertension, you should also avoid Chilli.
And one more thing in the end. People with acne, or so-called problematic skin, must be aware that Chilli has a negative effect on their skin condition. Nevertheless, it is not the problem in every case, to be clear. However, there may be an increase in acne changes.
Thermogenics, which are worth including in the diet
For starters, these are spices. Apart from Chilli, it is worth to enrich your dishes with cinnamon, ginger and garlic, among others. Another very rich group are vegetables and fruits containing vitamin C which is a necessary ingredient when burning excess fat tissue. Apples, pears, currants and gooseberries are great substitutes for sweets.
It is also necessary to include vegetables rich in fibre in the menu. They range from broccoli, carrots, tomatoes, cauliflower to asparagus beans. There are really many possibilities.
